It wasn’t until recent years that I discovered Bud Powell, the composer and I’m glad I did. There is no doubt that he was a melodic genius. His work has a unique value for pianists in my view because he was the first to take Bird’s melodic language into the piano. Dance of the Infidels is one of his classics, which is why I chose it for this playlist, over some other solo piano recordings which would be very relevant to jazz piano styles. A good example is this stunningly beautiful solo piano version of his original, The Fruit
